MISSION: |
The
mission of The Roy
and Roxie Campanella Foundation (formerly known as The Roy and Roxie Campanella
Physical Therapy Scholarship Foundation) is twofold: to provide necessary
equipment, education, informational aids, emotional and financial support to
people living with spinal cord injuries; and to provide scholarships in the
final year of study for worthy college students preparing for careers as
physical therapists. |
|
WHO: |
The
Foundation was inspired by baseball Hall of Famer
Roy Campanella, whose catcher’s career with the Brooklyn Dodgers was cut short
by an accident that left him paralyzed in January 1958. For the remainder of his
life, Roy inspired people living with spinal cord injuries. He also remained an
active influence in baseball, helping to fine-tune the skills of the Dodger
catchers who followed him, including John Roseboro, Joe Ferguson, Steve Yeager,
Mike Scioscia, Rick Dempsey and Mike Piazza.

Since
his death in June 1993, his wife Roxie
and the Campanella family have continued to support his wishes through the work
of the Foundation.
